The ACLU of New Jersey has just released a free Android app that allows individuals to discretely record their interactions with the police.
The app, called Police Tape [Google Play link] will record audio (and if you want, video) of an encounter with the police.
Unlike normal audio/video recording apps, the recording interface disappears when in use, so it doesn't look like anyone is recording anything at the time.
The app also allows users -- at their discretion -- to send backup copies of the video to the ACLU-NJ for backup storage or for analysis of possible civil liberties violations.
An iOS version is in the works, though it will only record audio encounters. It's due out later this summer.
The New Jersey ACLU isn't the only branch of the organization creating apps to help monitor police encounters. In early June, the NYCLU released its Stop and Frisk Watch app.
