Air New Zealand is kicking the cool up a notch in its new in-flight safety video, featuring world champion surfers catching waves while also demonstrating what to do in case of an on-board emergency.

The carrier's latest video uses stunning surfing videography as a backdrop to the otherwise boring safety routine.

Alana Blanchard, big wave surfer and model Anastasia Ashley, and 2014 ASP World Tour champion Gabriel Medina are some of the wave-catching professionals who make appearances in the star-athlete-studded safety video.

Airlines have been working on making in-flight safety videos more than instructional, by incorporating them into their marketing. Air New Zealand has been leading the charge, with highly successful (as defined by online views) safety videos featuring characters from the Hobbit films, among other unexpected twists.
