Here's something that will make you think twice before you empty your pockets at airport security.

A United Airlines employee was arrested for stealing $576 from a passenger's wallet in a tray at a security checkpoint at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport.

Joseph A. Bruno, 52, was caught on camera taking the cash at the checkpoint in Terminal C, according to NJ.com. He was wearing a United uniform.

The passenger had put his wallet in the tray, and notified authorities that the cash previously inside was gone when he retrieved it.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) -- not airlines -- handles checkpoint security, so Bruno may have been going through security along with other passengers.

United said it is working with authorities to investigate the incident.

"We hold our employees to the highest standards, and have zero tolerance for any theft," a United spokesperson told Mashable in an email. "We are assisting the Port Authority Police Department in this investigation, and this employee has been held out of service."

The passenger got his cash back, according to police.

In 2012, a convicted former TSA agent told ABC News that stealing from passengers' luggage was "commonplace."

"It was very convenient to steal," he said.

The lesson, here, for travelers: Put valuables like your billfold inside your carry-on bags, instead of leaving them loose.
