Steve Carrell made his career in the "cringe comedy" subgenre that began with Ben Stiller's 1998 wince-worthy masterpiece There's Something About Mary, and has lately been elevated by Louis C.K.

Now Carell, the star of TV awkward-fest The Office seems to have outdone himself with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

The first trailer for Disney's family comedy is here, and if you're sensitive to things going horribly wrong for good people, normally I'd advise you to sit this one out. But clearly there's an uplifting note in the adaptation of the classic children’s book by Judith Viorst -- mostly thanks to the charming Ed Oxenbould, who plays the titular boy who keeps his chin up in the face of ... well, it's all there in the title.
