Alfresco Gets Another $9M for Open Source Content Management

Alfresco Software, an open source content management alternative to software created for large companies, has received an additional $9 million in a third round of financing, led by SAP Ventures and existing investors Accel Partners and Mayfield Fund also joining the round. This brings the total amount raised to $19 million.

Aside from the continued commercialization of open source software, specifically for use with web 2.0 trends, Alfresco has targeted larger businesses with its software offerings, bringing tools for web 2.0 capabilities into the office. One way in which Alfresco has done this is by building integrated applications for existing networks and tools, including Facebook and iGoogle. This is primarily because Facebook is becoming a utility for communication amongst professionals (or so the murmurs say), an Alfresco has taken advantage of this trend in order to provide document-sharing tools that operate within Facebook's social network.

While this particular tactic may not be a primary one or Alfresco's overall plan for continuing forward, it does speak to the company's efforts to provide lighter weight tools that businesses can use in conjunction with existing applications, as opposed to some of the other enterprise content management services that are still around. No specifics have been revealed in regards to how Alfresco plans on using the funds from this most recent round of funding, but I imagine they will go towards the efforts of attracting more customers.
