Tuz Golu, is a large, saline lake that sits outside the town of Aksaray in central Turkey. Spanning over 600 square miles it is Turkey’s second-largest lake, and one of the largest hypersaline bodies of water in the world.

During drier months, tourists are able to walk out into the middle of the lake and explore the salt flats.

Frequently, however, the lake also plays host to an enormous bloom of Dunaliella salinas algae, which turns the water of Tuz Golu a deep crimson red. These scenes were photographed at Tuz Golu on July 16, 2015.
