Is this the same techniques Cher’s fashion-centric computer used in Clueless?

If you post #OOTD (or outfit of the day) pictures on Instagram, than this study was made for you. Four researchers from the University of Toronto have developed an algorithm that will study your photograph and tell you how to dress more fashionably.

This is, as many will soon recognize, the best and highest use of social media for fashionistas. Whether through a filter or extreme editing techniques, people go to extremes to get a “perfect” picture.

The goal was “to learn and predict how fashionable a person looks on a photograph and suggest subtle improvements the user could make to improve her/his appeal,” says the article posted on The Computer Vision.

“People want to look good; business or casual, elegant or sporty, sexy but not slutty, and of course trendy, particularly so when putting their picture online,” the researchers explained.

The team started their research by analyzing 144,169 photos posted on the website chictopia.com, where users post images of their outfits. Other visitors to the site can then vote for or comment on the person’s picture. Data was collected based on amount of votes (similar to Instagram hearts or Facebook likes), comments, and tags describing the outfit.

Beside judging solely based on the outfit and how it fits that specific person, this algorithm also makes suggestions depending on scenery, lighting, and angles in order to “maximize her/his look instead of their current outfit,” the article states.

The technique is so thorough that it can show outfit trends and fashion scores around the world from the past 6 years. “Such analysis is important for the users, as they can adapt to the trends in “real-time” as well as to the fashion industry, which can adapt their new designs based on the popularity of garment types” the researchers describe. It’s a helpful tool for both consumers and designers.

This algorithm appears to be suggesting that other people's comments on your look are what is important in fashion. We say, wear whatever makes you feel fab. This is just a fun tool to use if you need some styling ideas!
