Alvin and the Chipmunks may just be the greatest chipmunk band of our time.

But not everyone appreciates squealing tweenage squirrels, which is why one Toronto musician decided to slow down their songs.

Brian Borcherdt, the musician behind the tracks and a former member of the band Holy F*ck, isn’t your stereotypical Chipmunks fan. But Borcherdt realized that if he slowed down the music, a strange thing would happen: It would sound goth.

“The results would be really deep and guttural and slow,” he told NOW Toronto, a local city paper.

He was able to slow the Chipmunks’ tracks to a sedated 16 RPM, and now, the furry pop stars sound like goth teens singing Morrissey songs at a lonely karaoke bar.
