Amazon might be preparing to launch a Square-like credit card reader, according to a leaked Staples document obtained by 9to5Mac.

In the document, Staples lists an "Amazon card reader" among other similar devices, including Paypal's Here mobile card reader, several Casio cash registers and Staples' own credit card reader.

The document reveals the cost of Amazon's reader -- $9.99 -- as well as a likely time frame for launch, since Staples is supposed to start advertising it on August 12.

A separate source told 9to5Mac that Amazon's hardware division is working on mobile payment products which include a biometric fingerprint scanner.

None of this is official, but Amazon did recently launch its Wallet app, which currently cannot be used to make purchases but it seems poised to connect with a piece of hardware such as a mobile card reader.

We've contacted Amazon for comment but have not yet heard from the company.
