Amazon launched a new product line on Thursday aimed at providing consumers with ... diapers?

Amazon Elements is the ecommerce giant's offering that provides parents with a way to order "everyday essentials" that have been vetted by other users and Amazon's research. While the announcement does not seem to explicitly say it is only for diapers, that's just about all that is for sale currently. The program is open only to Amazon Prime customers.

The program touts premium products with transparent origins as important features. The environmental impact of diapers can be a pressing issue for new parents, something Amazon clearly wants to address.

The Amazon diapers appeared to be priced competitively with other diapers available on the site, though not always cheaper. A monthly pack of Size 1 Amazon Elements diapers was priced at 19 cents per diaper, while a Pampers pack cost 22 cents per diaper. But at Size 4, Amazon charged 28 cents per diaper for its own brand in a monthly pack, while Huggies and Pampers were at 25 or 26 cents each. (Additional discounts were available on all the brands with an Amazon Mom subscription.)

Amazon's history with diapers is a little complicated. It famously pressured Diapers.com, a successful ecommerce company it was interested in acquiring, by dropping prices. Amazon then bought the company for $540 million after slowing the company's growth.
