Just over a year after it was launched, it appears the Amazon Fire Phone has joined the choir invisible.

Amazon's widely-panned Fire Phone is no longer available for purchase on its site, reports Geek Wire. This seems to confirm earlier reports that Amazon is shifting its hardware strategy away from phones.

In an email sent to Mashable, an Amazon representative confirmed that the company had sold through its Global and U.S. inventory, and isn't planning to "replenish" its stock.

Given the fact that this news broke on Apple's iPhone 6S release day, it may seem that Amazon is trying to burry its news, but a company representative told Geek Wire that inventory was sold out in August.

An August Wall Street Journal report said that Amazon was not going to make a follow up to the Fire Phone, instead focusing on developing more smart home devices and tablets.

While devices like the Kindle e-reader and the Echo smart home hub have been well received, the Fire Phone didn't receive much love. The phone struggled to gain traction among customers, prompting Amazon to slash prices from $449 to $199 unlocked, and from $199 to $0.99 cents on contract.

The phone had some unique features, like dynamic perspective, firefly and gesture control, but it was only a great phone for Amazon customers. The fact that it was only available on AT&T was also a huge mistake, closing the door on a host of potential customers.

Last October, Amazon had to take a $170 million charge on the phone, thanks to unsold inventory.

At a Business Insider conference last December, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that it was too early to declare the Fire Phone a failure. At this point, the Fire Phone could be confidently declared a failure.
