Amazon Cuts Kindle Price to $80

As Amazon launched its new tablet product and a touch reader on Wednesday, it announced that it would reduce the price of its original e-ink Kindle to $79 -- effective today.

The new $79 e-ink Kindle is slightly thinner, lighter and faster than its predecessors.

Previously the least expensive Kindle sold for $139. If a reader opted to receive special offers on his or her screensaver, Amazon knocked the price down to $114.

The price reduction makes the e-ink Kindle significantly cheaper than its biggest competitor, Barnes & Noble's $139 e-ink Nook.
