Subscribers to Amazon's $79-per-year Prime service will now have access to prior seasons of shows from the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery and the Science and Military Channel. Among the more recognizable titles -- or, rather, those touted in the press release -- include Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs, TLC's Say Yes To The Dress and Animal Planet's Whale Wars. Content is available for viewing through desktops, Internet-connected TVs and Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet.

Amazon's last streaming deal was signed with Viacom in February. The company has also licensing deals with Fox, CBS, NBC, Sony and Warner Bros., among others.

Together, the agreements bring the total number of titles in Amazon's Instant Video library to more than 17,000, making it an increasingly viable competitor to larger streaming subscription services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. Google and Verizon are also expected to launch an online video streaming service later this year.

The streaming battle isn't just being fought in the U.S. In the UK in January, Netflix launched its service to compete with Amazon's LoveFilm. Meanwhile, billionaire Carlos Slim is reportedly developing a web video service for Mexico.
