The United States is home to around 75 million Catholics, and while that number marks it as having one of the largest Catholic populations in the world, it only accounts for about 24% of America's population.

That means Catholics in America make up a much smaller share of the country's total population than Catholics do in many nations throughout South America, Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia.

We took a look at the relative size of Catholic populations around the globe, below, ahead of Pope Francis' September visit to the United States.

Timor-Leste is 98% Catholic, the highest percentage of any country in the world outside of Vatican City, according to the latest comprehensive data from Pew Research Center. Brazil, home to the world's largest Catholic population--around 134 million people--is about 69% Catholic.
