The horror anthology's new season is set in a hotel in downtown Los Angeles and partially inspired by the 2013 surveillance video of Elisa Lam, a student whose bizarre behavior in a hotel elevator before her death sparked numerous -- sometimes paranormal-based -- theories.

According Murphy, Hotel is all about "American horrors" like addiction, which seems to be an issues for at least one character this season.
