Ever since Apple released its first-generation iPad in 2010, iOS reigned supreme as the top tablet operating system of choice. But, just as Android smartphones have cut into iPhone sales around the world, Android tablets are finding upward success in the global market.

According to a new report from Gartner, Android tablets saw a much larger growth in tablet sales last year than any other operating system, rising from 53.3 million units in global sales in 2012 to 121 million in 2013.

It's important to note, however, that as a single manufacturer, Apple remains at the top. To put this in even more perspective, a recent Chitika report cites that Apple tablet web usage in the U.S. and Canada increased considerably as of Q1 2014.

The following chart, created by Statista, breaks down Gartner's findings, comparing global tablet sales between 2012 and 2013.
