Moby made a name for himself by giving up his music for others to use however they wanted. The trend has evolved, thanks to a variety of web-based media-mixing tools that let you combine music with photos, videos and text. Thankfully, the music industry is slowly learning that giving up its content is a good way to promote albums and artists, as well as earn a bit of extra revenue from viral distribution.
But Animoto is launching a new program that provides a direct way for artists to lend their music for creative mixing, which extends a marketing opportunity for artists to promote their music. Animoto is actually setting this up to be more like a monthly contest than anything else, so the company will select a handful of finalists for the users to vote on, and the winner will be featured as an artist who's music can be used for mixing purposes on the site.
