Writers Guild names 'Annie Hall' funniest screenplay of all time

The Writers Guild of America has voted Annie Hall the funniest screenplay of all time, choosing the film as its top pick from a list of 101 contenders. The Oscar-winning 1977 screenplay beat out the works of Monty Python and Mel Brooks, as well as comedy classics like Ghostbusters and more recent fare like Bridesmaids.

The full shortlist pooled together everything from silent films of the 1920s to movies like The Hangover and Wedding Crashers. Panels met to discuss the films and screen clips at a Guild event in Hollywood, after which Rob Reiner announced the top rankings.

The top 20, according to The Guardian, were as follows:
