Anthony Weiner Is Playing It Safe on Twitter

Anthony Weiner's Twitter account feels human again -- but a very safe human.

Weiner first returned to Twitter last November, but his tweets lacked the, ahem, personality of his former social presence. Following his Tuesday announcement that he's running for mayor of New York City, his tweets have been slightly less robotic, slightly more personal and definitely hashtag-heavy:

anthonyweiner.comIt's a website for my campaign for mayor.Take a look. #GoingWithUnderstatementToStart— Anthony Weiner (@anthonyweiner) May 22, 2013

On with @brianlehrer 10am. #SorryIMissedPledgeWeek— Anthony Weiner (@anthonyweiner) May 23, 2013

While at least a little funny, these tweets aren't anything like the sarcastic Weiner tweets we once knew.

Weiner's got good cause to play it safe on Twitter: His political career nearly ended after his habit of texting and direct messaging female admirers with lewd messages and photos surfaced. Even major national political outlets are paying close attention to Weiner's renewed social media presence, waiting for any slip-up that might impact his candidacy.

Who's the unfortunate soul with the job of running Weiner's social media accounts? Weiner told Talking Points Memo he "doesn't know" who will be running the digital side of the campaign. His website, however, is run by left-leaning political technology firm NGP VAN. Mashable has emails out to NGP VAN to find out more.

How should Anthony Weiner use Twitter and other social media in his mayoral bid? Share your thoughts in the comments.
