In December 1846, the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery society held one of its regular fairs. On sale at this particular event was The Anti-Slavery Alphabet, a slim volume written by Hannah and Mary Townsend and published by Merrihew & Thompson. The book aimed to educate the youngest of readers on the importance and moral necessity of the abolitionist movement.
