Who Cares About HD Video Online? Not AOL.

AOL seems to be looking to move away from its HD online efforts, as adoption rate has been slow. It is, in fact, phasing out its Hi-Q service because people simply aren't using it.

One reason its the fact that it requires a separate download, which is always a hurdle for mainstream adoption rate. Additionally, there were some compatibility issues with different browsers, specifically Firefox. And AOL isn't the only one that feels this way. CBS has shared a similar sentiment regarding its HD service.

So does this mean that the online video delivery trend is moving away from HD? Interestingly enough, several of the online video networks that have been funded recently are very much focusing on their HD efforts.

So what now? Will the new efforts from the video networks convince AOL and CBS that continuing to focus on quality, with more affordable and compatible measures? There are several options for HD video, like DivX, that don't require a download. Or is this just another example of technology taking a self-serving approach and not actually meeting consumer needs?

I think with the continued development from companies like Grid Networks, we'll see the supply meeting the demand in a happier medium, which will be beneficial for AOL, especially as AOL has been shifting its focus to a more slimmed down suite of services that give the company better returns.
