Apple Loses Appeal in Tablet Patent Dispute With Samsung

Apple lost its appeal of a UK court’s ruling that Samsung did not copy the iPad with its Galaxy tablet, Reuters reports.

In July, Britain's High Court ruled in favor of Samsung, explaining that Samsung’s Galaxy tablet, despite certain similarities, is simply “not as cool” as the iPad, and can therefore not be confused with that device.

Britain's Court of Appeal now upheld the July ruling, which instructed Apple to run ads in printed newspapers and on websites stating that Samsung did not copy the iPad.

The court's ruling is valid throughout Europe, not only in the UK, which should end the patent dispute between the two companies -- at least when it comes to tablets.

As expected, Samsung welcomed the judge's decision. "We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners," the company said in a statement.
