With its iCloud growing bigger and bigger every day, Apple needs to ramp up its data capacity. That's why the Cupertino company is opening a new data center in Prineville, Ore., the Oregonian reports.
Apple bought a 160-acre lot for $5.6 million in February and quickly built a small, temporary 10,000-square-foot data center. Now the company is starting to work on its fourth major data center. Just phase one of the complex in Prineville will cost $68 million.
Prineville is also home to one of Facebook's giant data houses. Companies tend to cluster their data centers in the same areas, drawn to low energy and real estate costs and lower tax rates.
