The company launched a free dedicated app on Thursday that lets teachers arrange audio, video and iBooks into courses. Teachers can also create a complete syllabus and even add office hours and assignments.

Students of the new iTunes U courses can either stream or download content and add their own notes. When assignments are added, they can opt to receive a notification.

Since launching four years ago, previous versions of the iTunes U app have been downloaded 700 million times and housed content from more than 1,000 colleges and universities.
