Apple Maps App Was Actually an Art Project [VIDEO]

If those melting highways and crumbling buildings in the Apple Maps app seemed like something out of Salvador Dali's oeuvre, there's a reason for that -- according to this short mockumentary on YouTube.

The video from PuppetShed, a comedy outfit that likes to overdub archival footage, imagines that Apple asked a high-concept French artist to turn Maps' Flyover feature into a commentary on modern American society. Why else would the landmark Brooklyn Bridge look like it collapsed into the East River, if not to make a statement?

PuppetShed appears to have gone the extra meta mile and generated an outraged commenter on YouTube who took the whole thing far too seriously: "I can appreciate existential art, but come on ... we're talking about a mapping application that's supposed to allow users to accurately navigate themselves around unfamiliar places in the world," writes YouTube user "ictduga."

"I can't believe Apple bought into this guy's philosophical line of pap. Gimme a break!"
