Apple adapts its heartwarming holiday ad for China

Apple's U.S. holiday ad "The Song" has been retold for the Chinese market.

The ad, timed for the Lunar New Year on Feb. 22, features the same plot as the original version: A young woman stumbles upon an old recording, learns the song and plays the new version for her grandmother.

The Chinese version uses the classic tune "Forever Smiling," which was originally performed by Zhou Xuan, a Chinese singer from the '40s. Ann Hui On-Wah, a Hong Kong new wave auteur, directed the ad.

The spot comes as Apple continues to make inroads into the Chinese market. Last quarter was the first time that the iPhone was the best-selling smartphone there, according to Canalys.
