LONDON -- A revamped shoe polish factory, a primary school, an Art Deco office block and a refitted book shop were among the big winners at the RIBA London Building of the Year Award Monday night.

38 projects across the city were given props for architectural excellence, including eight commercial winners, 16 residential winners, 11 schools, university and community winners and three arts and leisure winners. Repurposed buildings featured prominently in the winning entries, which included several public spaces as well as private residences.

“London is an open and international city and has perhaps the highest concentration of design talent found anywhere in the world," RIBA London interim director Owen Wainhouse said. "It’s that concentration of talent, exchange of ideas and fierce competition that makes London such an exciting and challenging place for the practice of architecture."

Here's a look at some of the winning projects.
