Get ready for a catfight.

Well, not exactly. But that's the term Lucy Liu jokingly used to describe what would go down as Joan and Sherlock's new partner, Kitty Winter (Ophelia Lovibond), become acquainted during the new season of Elementary, premiering Oct. 30.

"I think the tension that is built in the first episode is an interesting way to layer what's going to happen in Season 3," she said. "[Joan and Sherlock] are fractured, and I'm not sure it's about repairing it but it's about change. And change is hard for everyone."

During the first episode, which was screened for the crowd at New York Comic Con, Joan particularly has a hard time dealing with seeing her former partner find a replacement so seemingly easy. At the end of Season 2, Sherlock took a job with MI6 across the pond after Watson moved out of the Brownstone they shared.

"I don't think he sees the pain it's caused her," she says. "It's hard to hear you've been replaced in any relationship. It's going to change the way their dynamic is."

Kitty, executive producer John Polson explained, was inspired by a minor-but-interesting character featured in the Sherlock story "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client."

The next few episodes, Jonny Lee Miller added, will open up Kitty's backstory and reveal that she's "had some not-so-great experiences, which is probably an understatement."

Elementary premieres Thursday, Oct. 30 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
