Artistic Robot Decides What to Paint Next

Some people would say that painting takes years of practice and cannot be mastered by everyone. But if that's the case, how would those people explain a robot that learned to paint in a fraction of that time?

e-David is an ordinary welding machine that has been equipped with sensors, a camera and a control computer -- not to mention painting supplies that consist of five different brushes and a 24-color palette.

After receiving a set of initial instructions from a programmer, e-David goes to work on his first masterpiece. Instead of operating under the programmer's full control, the robot watches itself paint and decides on its own where to add the next stroke.

The end result would -- hopefully -- be a completed painting, testing the limits of machine learning and revealing whether painting is made up of rules just like so many other processes. Watch the video below to see the results:
