An Asus HoloLens could make holograms cheap enough for everyone

Augmented reality headsets are the next virtual reality headsets.

Asus is interested in building its own version of Microsoft's HoloLens, a visor that can display holograms right on top of the real world, according to CNET.

Asus chairman Jonney Shih told the publication the company is "still evaluating" the idea of releasing its own augmented reality headset and that consumers will have to "wait and see."

Microsoft is betting on HoloLens to be a pillar of success in its mission to get up to 1 billion users on Windows 10, its newest operating system.

Playing with holograms won't come cheap. For developers, a HoloLens dev kit will cost $3,000. The consumer version of HoloLens will likely be priced much lower.

Still, if Asus were to build its own AR headset, it could potentially sell it for a lot less than what Microsoft ultimately decides to sell HoloLens, the same way it does with its PCs.

Impressive as Microsoft makes HoloLens appear at its onstage demos (Minecraft, robots bursting out of walls, etc.), it's important to keep expectations grounded in reality. This tech analyst and Mashable games editor Chelsea Stark can both tell you the holograms look great, but the headset's extremely tiny and limited field of view is nothing like what you see in those demos.

Google is also exploring augmented reality. The company is an investor in Magic Leap, a startup that is experimenting with how to weave augmented reality with the real world in a wide range of industries, from gaming to education.
