AT&T Sells 10 Million Smartphones in 4Q, a New Record

AT&T sold 10 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, breaking the company's previous record of 9.4 million in 4Q 2011.

The results, which include Android models and iPhones, break down to 110,000 smartphones a day, according to the company. AT&T didn't provide a breakdown of Android sales vs. iPhone sales. The latter likely enjoyed a boost thanks to the September introduction of the iPhone 5. AT&T's primary U.S. rival, Verizon, hasn't release comparable figures yet. For the fourth quarter or 2011, Verizon sold 7.7 million smartphones.

AT&T's figures come as smartphone owners became the majority in the U.S. According to Nielsen 56% of wireless subscribers in the U.S. had smartphones in the third quarter. Apple and Samsung -- the top manufacturer of Android phones -- haven't yet reported their calendar 4Q sales.

Daewoo Securities estimates that Samsung sold 62 million smartphones in the December quarter while Apple sold 45 million iPhones, according to a report in Bloomberg.
