On Day 1 of the Australian Open in Melbourne, the audience got a little more than it bargained for.

American player Christina McHale, 22, vomited on the court during the intense third set of her battle with French player Stephanie Foretz on Monday. In remarkable form, McHale went on to win, 6-4, 1-6, 12-10, in the 3-hour, 8-minute marathon match.

The footage played on ESPN, multiple times and in slow motion, shows the world No. 54 bending over on the side of the court and throwing up.

"I realised I hadn't been feeling well, and finally I knew it was coming up," McHale told reporters, according to USA Today. "I felt so much better after it happened. I don't know what caused it."

The court was cleaned during a brief break and McHale went on to defeat Foretz.

She also said it was ESPN's "job" to show what happens on court, after the station received criticism for showing it, and apologised to her fans for oversharing.

That was one of the craziest matches of my life... Sorry for the overshare! Thanks for your amazing support, so happy :) #ausopen15 A photo posted by Christina McHale (@christina_mchale) on Jan 19, 2015 at 3:52am PST
