Autumn: ‘Tis the season of hot cider, cable knit sweaters and an irrational obsession with pumpkin products. As the weather cools and green fades from the trees, we’re reminded that winter is coming. Soonish.

But before we brace ourselves for the cold, let’s take a second to drink in the colors and feeling of autumn. There's apple picking, cozy coats and not to mention fall foliage, which has long been heralded as one of Mother Nature’s true spectacles. And when it comes to photography, there’s nothing quite like the deep, raw reds and oranges of this season.

This week, for Mashable's Photo Challenge, we’re asking readers to submit photos that capture the essence of autumn. Opt for subjects that suggest transition: the start of football season and a new school year, for example. Or, snap a pic showcasing your favorite fall recipe. Yum.

We'll collect submissions until Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. ET, and feature some of our favorites on Mashable's Instagram account and in a follow-up post.
