American director Ava DuVernay has achieved much. Now she can add her very own Barbie doll to that list.
Though the doll was part of a limited release earlier this year, Mattel released an expanded, mass-produced line of DuVernay dolls on Monday. Less than an hour after its launch, they sold out.
Sold out on Barbie collection, I'm told. More available at Amazon. What the hell is going on? #bananas #nuts #whoa https://t.co/xNdWlav3uf— Ava DuVernay (@AVAETC) December 7, 2015
We’re excited to share that the @AVAETC doll sold out on https://t.co/5t20Vu1EOV! It will be available on https://t.co/KFfSt3y80q shortly.— Barbie (@Barbie) December 7, 2015
DuVernay tweeted Monday afternoon that a few of the coveted creations are still available on Amazon -- but those look to be sold, as well. There, the dolls retailed for $65, with an anticipated arrival date of Jan. 1.
The original DuVernay Barbie was created in the filmmaker's likeness as a part of Mattel's Shero project, which used the nearly foot-high lookalikes to honor six inspirational women in the entertainment industry. All six dolls were auctioned off to charity at the time.
Aiming to benefit charity once again, all proceeds from DuVernay Barbie doll sales will be donated to Witness and Color of Change.
All my proceeds from #AvaBarbie will be sent from @Mattel to @ColorOfChange + @WitnessOrg. A fun way to support. xo! pic.twitter.com/O4Z5zl5els— Ava DuVernay (@AVAETC) December 6, 2015
