Modern Avengers vs. their original counterparts

The modern iterations of the Avengers definitely have their own distinctive style — but just how closely to they resemble the old Avengers of yore?

Kate Willaert decided to illustrate the original comic book versions of the Avengers and put them side-by-side with their modern movie poster counterparts to compare how much (or little) the characters' original designs have changed.

Willaert used an impressive attention to detail while creating the illustrations. "I printed the poster images out in non-photo blue ink, and drew on top of them in black ink," Willaert told Mashable in an email. "I used brush pens to get that heavy contrast in line thickness. After scanning them in, I colored them digitally using an era-authentic color palette, and added a subtle newsprint texture to make them look vintage."

The resulting images look like they could have been torn straight out of an old comic book.

Willaert knack for comic book renderings is no accident — she's been creating superheroes and panels of action since college. "I have a BFA in Graphic Design from MCAD. At the time it was one of the few colleges offering a Comic Art program, so I filled my electives with every comics-related course I could."

Willaert has illustrated a number of officially licensed Back To The Future and Marvel shirts for Shirts.com, and writes a column on comic cover design for ComicsBeat.com.
