Stand-up phenom and Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari explained his views on feminism to David Letterman Monday night.

After asking how many members of he audience were feminists (and receiving a relatively tepid response), Ansari explained the cultural stereotypes that often surround feminism and broke down the word to its dictionary-defined meaning.

"If you believe that men and women have equal rights, if someone asks if you're a feminist, you have to say yes," Ansari said. "Because that is how words work."
