Most deers don’t trust humans, and for a good reason. But as one man recently discovered, when humans step up to the plate, adorable cross-species friendships can blossom.

Darius Sasnauskas lives near Yellowstone National Park and recently rescued a wounded baby deer from his backyard. After the deer was born, her injuries were too severe to allow her to keep up with her family. She was then abandoned because, as Sasnauskas explains in the video caption, she "had injured leg and could not keep up with the mother.”

Most people might just leave the animal behind, but Sasnauskas decided to bring her home. While the outdoorsman “does not support keeping wild animals as pets,” he chose to make an exception in this situation. He nursed her back to health, and then released her into the wild — only to have her come back to him, time and time again.

Just recently, the baby deer was finally reunited with her family. Check out the video Sasnauka made documenting the process, and make sure to check out the exceptionally cute part at 14:40.
