Perfect bundle of joy, perfect name for said bundle of joy. On Friday morning, the Smithsonian National Zoo announced that its new giant baby panda cub, who is just over a month old, finally has a name: Bei Bei.
First Lady Michelle Obama and First Lady of the People's Republic of China Peng Liyuan announced the name, which translates to "precious, treasure" in Mandarin, at a ceremony at the National Zoo on Friday.
We are honored to announce that First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama and First Lady of the People’s Republic of China Peng Liyuan named our giant panda cub! His name is Bei Bei, meaning “precious, treasure” and is complementary to his big sister Bao Bao’s name. Our collaboration with Chinese scientists to save giant pandas from extinction started after the state visit of President Nixon to China in 1972. Bei Bei, as all of our pandas are, is a symbol of the 43 years of research that we have accomplished together. The Smithsonian Nation Zoo reports that panda keepers from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda brainstormed the name.
Bei Bei is the younger brother of 2-year-old older sister Bao Bao and the son of mother Mei Xiang and father Tian Tian. According to a press release from the National Zoo, Bao Bao and Tian Tian relaxed in their outdoor yard and munched on panda-friendly treats during the celebration.
Just another joyous day for celebrity baby pandas.
