Do we really need another niche version of MySpace, let alone one with "space" in the title? The folks at BakeSpace certainly think so, having launched their new social network yesterday. It's your standard setup, complete with profiles, friends, messaging, invites, forums and comments. Your profile page page is also customizable, allowing you to choose a skin, enter your own css and insert videos from YouTube, Google Video, MySpace Video and other external services. The cooking specific stuff includes the ability to share recipes, as well as some questionable theming - your profile is referred to as "My Kitchen", while the forums are known as the "Pantry". The site is free, but there are fields for your Paypal email address - presumably they plan to add a premium membership in the future.

If they're trying to be like MySpace, they've done a good job on the interface - BakeSpace is clunky and unintuitive at the best of times. In fact, the color scheme and odd navigation make the site virtually unusable. However, we know from MySpace that ugly design isn't a problem, so long as you can seed the network with enough influencers. Likewise, the social mapping site Frappr is seeing more success than your average Web 2.0 startup, despite having an exceptionally poor interface. It certainly won't get any love from the tech crowd, but I expect the cooking community is more concerned with the content than BakeSpace's lack of technical finesse.
