LONDON -- Two people have died and six were injured after a balcony collapsed in central London.

The London Ambulance Service were called to the incident in Cadogan Square at 10am Friday and treated eight patients, they said. One died at the scene and a second passed away later on.

It's thought that the deceased were removal men carrying a sofa.

2/2 were moving a sofa out and the combined weight might have broken it. Casualties were removal staff. My thoughts are with their families.

Cadogan Square is situated in Knightsbridge, in west central London. It's known for being one of the most expensive streets in the UK, with homes costing in excess of £5 million ($7.8 million).

UPDATE: 14:55p.m. GMT

A neighbour told BBC News: "They were trying to pull a couch up to the first-floor apartment with ropes. Was apparently too heavy. The fence broke off and fell on the workmen below."

London Fire Brigade posted an update on the situation. “When we arrived we made the scene safe, securing parts of the iron balcony that had broken away in the fall," they said. "Crews assisted London Ambulance Service to provide first aid to those injured in the fall as well as to a number of onlookers who were suffering from shock.”
