Update: One Mashable reader found a work-around. From the Bank of America homepage, click on "Small Businesses." From there, it seems even personal-banking users can log in and access their accounts. [h/t beley]

Bank of America spokesperson Tara Burke assured the Wall Street Journal that the banking giant isn't a victim of a cyberattack and that none of its customers personal or account data had been compromised.

Bank of America stopped accepting payments for WikiLeaks late last year -- an act that provoked a group of Anonymous hackers to take down other banking institutions. However, in a tweet this afternoon, Anonymous said that it's not responsible, but not necessarily unhappy about the bank's downtime either. The tweet said: "We love problems that solve themselves."

Rather than being the result of a cyberattack, Burke said the problems were caused by routine upgrades made over the weekend. The slowness wasn't reportedly affecting any particular region, but the current disrupted service seems to be widespread. We've heard from customers in New Jersey, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and California who can't access their accounts.

The disruption comes at an inconvenient time for many customers who pay bills on the first of the month.

We have reached out to Bank of America, and we will update this post with any information about when service is expected to return.

UPDATE: Bank of America spokesperson Tara Burke said in a phone call that efforts to repair site latency issues are causing the disruptions in online banking service. These disruptions are not limited to a particular region. Burke did not name a time when service is expected to be restored, but said that the bank is working to complete the fix "as soon as possible."
