You Have a New Direct Message From Obama

If you follow any of the Barack Obama campaign's Twitter accounts and you've recently received a direct message from them, you're not alone: Obama's social media team is sending DMs to followers asking them to use their Twitter influence to promote the candidate as part of his "Twitter team."

Here's a DM received by this reporter from the @Obama2012 account. (I follow all official accounts of both the Obama and Romney campaigns.)

That DM links to a page where I'm asked to sign up to be a part of Obama's "Twitter team."

"Because you've got the ears of a lot of people on Twitter, you're in a great place to help turnout the vote for President Obama," reads the page. "Here's all you need to do to help get information out about voter registration, polling places, and other details about election day."

We're not yet sure if the campaign is sending DMs to all followers, or only those with a certain number of followers or otherwise high engagement rates.

We've asked the Obama folks for more details and will update this post when we hear back. We've also asked Mitt Romney's team if they're doing the same. If you have received a DM from any of the Obama or Romney accounts, let us know in the comments.
