When dressing up as an X-Wing pilot for Halloween is too old-school, there's this BB-8 Pumpkin.

One of the biggest breakout stars of the new Star Wars movie (which hasn't hit theaters yet) is BB-8, an orange roly-poly Droid that's spinning its way into everyone's hearts. Now it's going to be rolling onto your neighborhood's front porches, thanks to one trailblazing Twitter user.

Daniel Hoogkamp, who goes by @Dantooine2 on Twitter, blessed the world with his pumpkin-based droid creation on Sept. 23.

Hoogkamp's BB-8kin quickly picked up steam, with a feature on the Star Wars website and a couple of derivatives on Twitter.

The BB-8 looks like its pretty simple to make if you're handy with a paintbrush; you don't even need to carve it.

In a time where consumers are overwhelmed with Star Wars merchandise ("Merchandising! Merchandising! Where the real money for the movie is made!"), it's nice to see fans take a DIY approach. Of the two BB-8 toys on the market, the Hasbro variant is $80, while Sphero's version is $149.99. This pumpkin is probably quite a bit cheaper.

One gets the impression that there's a room of Disney executives kicking themselves for not having thought of this first.
