Behind #GBSB: A Competition That's Sew Fierce

Trending topics hit Twitter every day. One of today's trending topics, #GBSB, is less on the digital side of things and more so -- well, domestic.

The Great Britain Sewing Bee, or #GBSB, is a four-part reality sewing competition that premiered on BBC 2 Tuesday night. The show aims to find some of the United Kingdom's most talented stitchers through timed competitions.

The Women's Institute, where the show's co-host May Martin works as a tutor, tweeted the hashtag earlier Tuesday.

Don’t miss the first episode of Great British Sewing Bee on BBC2 at 8pm, with WI tutor May Martin as a judge #GBSB tinyurl.com/cdgplgg— Women's Institute (@WomensInstitute) April 2, 2013

Viewers across the board were eager to drop comments, one-liners and self-deprecating jokes about watching the premiere. We've compiled a few of our favorites below.

I thought I was going to cringe watching #GBSB but you know, I'm rather transfixed. Sewing straight top stitch under pressure - terrifying!!— Sheara A (@ShearaDesigns) April 2, 2013

Apart from the Home Economics lessons PTSD flashbacks I'm getting, I'm rather enjoying the Sewing Bee. #gbsb— Cara Jetten (@carajetten) April 2, 2013

Watching competitive sewing on TV. I need to get out more #gbsb— Lisa Hudson (@LisaJoHudson) April 2, 2013

Sewing was banned at my school when one kid hit another with an ironing board and the kid hit him back with the iron. #GBSB— whatchasaying (@WhatChaSaying) April 2, 2013

I predict a rise in sewing machine sales #gbsb— sarah (@sozzle77) April 2, 2013

That male judge is SO absurdly handsome, tall, groomed and suave I'm having instant inferiority complex palpitations #GBSB— Simon Wilder (@mr_s_wilder) April 2, 2013

That green material won't work in the dress he's designed. #gbsb— Katie Vale (@KatieJayneVale) April 2, 2013

The step by step.....#GBSB they didn't match the checks on the seams of the laundry bag.......shame :(— Denton Drapes (@curtain_making) April 2, 2013

I am so in sync with the judges *pats self on back* #gbsb— Jess Fawcett (@jessfawcett) April 2, 2013

Missed opportunity not to have Sir Patrick Stewart hosting #SewingBee, so he could say "Make It Sew" after setting challenges. #GBSB— Ed Brody (@chiefbrody1984) April 2, 2013

Several viewers seemed quite taken by the show's co-host, fashion designer -- and suave-talker -- Patrick Grant.

Um hello Patrick Grant. I think I just took up sewing. #GBSB— Katy A (@whatkatydidnow) April 2, 2013

When do we get shown how to sew our very own Patrick Grant? #sewingbee #GBSB— Dunners (@the_dunners) April 2, 2013

HELLO PATRICK GRANT. #gbsb— Ed Brody (@chiefbrody1984) April 2, 2013

I always imagine I look a bit like a Patrick Grant. Then I get dressed and see myself in the mirror. #GBSB— David Jørgensen (@misterjorgensen) April 2, 2013
