MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign notched a big win in New Hampshire on Tuesday, and on Wednesday night it had a different kind of victory.

Between the time polls closed here in New Hampshire on Tuesday and mid-afternoon Wednesday, his campaign brought in $5.2 million.

The average donation was $34, according to campaign aides.

Sanders's haul was likely in part due to how he used his moment in the spotlight. When he claimed victory in New Hampshire, with the news networks all carrying his speech, he had a request of his supporters: Donate.

"My request is please go to Berniesanders.com and contribute. Please help us raise the funds we need, whether it’s $10 bucks, $20 bucks, or $50 bucks," Sanders asked his supporters.

According to campaign aides, the $5.2 million haul broke the campaign's previous record for fundraising in less than a day. The campaign's previous record was $3 million, set in the 24 hours following Sanders's close loss in last week's Iowa caucuses.

While the Clinton campaign has a formidable fundraising network across the country, the Sanders campaign's success at leveraging online fundraising became clear after Sanders raised $20 million to Clinton's $15 million in January.

The rush of fresh financial support will give Sanders's campaign a boost as the race for the Democratic presidential nomination moves to Nevada and South Carolina, then to the 11 states that hold primary contests on March 1.
