If a picture tells a thousand words -- some of these photos tell an incredible story.

Photo agency Getty Images has compiled its "Year In Focus" for 2015, a selection of the best photographs that capture the biggest news stories and events that occurred around the world. From memorable cricket incidents through to tumultuous politics, the year Down Under was filled with moments worth snapping.

The final list was whittled down from a staggering 130,000 photographs provided by a network of photographers across the globe -- with more than 70,000 photos in entertainment, 30,000 photos in sport, 30,000 photos in news.

We've picked some of our favourite Australian photographs; where you'll witness the sublime, experience schadenfreude, or connect with the emotions of the people photographed.
