Betty White Thanks Internet for SNL Hosting Gig [VIDEO]

Well, Internet, why don't you go ahead and give yourself one, big pat on the back? As we all know by now, Golden Girls star Betty White is set to host Saturday Night Live on May 8, and she's out with a promo for the episode in which she thanks the Internet for the opp.

Back in December 2009, an ardent fan named David Mathews (not to be confused with the crooner beloved by frat boys everywhere) started a Facebook Page titled "Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!". Back then, Mathews told us he started the page because “one of the funniest and most admired actors in the history of television has never been on [SNL].”

The group blew up soon after its inception, popping up in mainstream media outlets and ultimately helping White secure a spot as SNL host.

Mathews's page, which now has 510,519...er... likers (not sure if there's an official term now that "fan" has gotten the heave-ho), has been flooded with comments about the upcoming appearance, and the main image has been adjusted accordingly (see below).

Although White jokingly thanks "the Internet" and then goes on to quip about how you shouldn't believe everything you see on the web, this whole occurrence really speaks to how social media outlets can put power in the hands of the people. Yeah, this is merely one episode of SNL -- I'm not saying it's equivalent to The March on Washington or anything -- but still, it had a quantifiable impact.

Now that this dream has finally come to fruition, what's next on the Internet's agenda? Well, one commenter seems to have started a new group: "Carol Burnett to Host SNL (PLEASE?)!", so there's that...
