The 'Big Bang Theory' season premiere was an emotional rollercoaster

Big Bang Theory sure knows how to throw a wedding.

It had previously set a pretty high bar with the Season 5 finale, which saw Howard and Bernadette tie the knot in a lovely rooftop ceremony. But when it came time Penny and Leonard to walk down the aisle, we always knew it'd have to be ... different.

Not because a show can't throw multiple white dress affairs. Friends had, like, 50 weddings. But because Penny and Leonard aren't what you'd call a traditional pair.

So them running off to Vegas to get hitched not only seemed like a true-to-form idea for this couple, it was a great idea.

It didn't seem like it was going to be at first. The magic just wasn't there for either party.

Penny seemed apathetic about their ceremony choices, Leonard was briefly distracted by an urgent call from Sheldon about his breakup with Amy, and the pair were coming off a pretty bad pre-wedding car fight where Leonard revealed he'd kissed another woman.

But once the ceremony got started, things got sweet.

"Penny, we are made of particles that have existed since the moment the universe began," Leonard said in his vows. "I like to think those atoms traveled 14 billion years through time and space to create us so we could be together and make each other whole."

Yeah. Fans ate that up because you really can't get better vows than that. I mean, they reference the Big Bang.

Penny's too were touching. In their own Penny-like way: She spoke the lyrics to "You Got a Friend in Me."

Their bliss was short-lived, though.

Leonard and Penny got into a big blowup after he revealed that he still sees Mandy (the woman he kissed) at work.

Leonard ended up spending his wedding night with Sheldon, who made no progress in fixing things with Amy in this episode.

Hint, Sheldon: You're not going to earn points with a woman when you tell her that her eggs have a "sell by date."

In this situation, Penny and Amy have more than than a few valid reasons to be angry with their significant others, but, frankly, it was all just a bummer to watch.

There were still some great laughs in the episode ("I'm done with women, like when I swore off Pop Rocks; they both hurt you on purpose"). But for a first episode back, I was hoping for more of them, especially after an entire summer of being reminded that love is dead.

Big Bang Theory was more sad than The Titanic tbh.— Briana (@bricaitlin1) September 22, 2015

Sheldon and Amy broke up. Leonard and Penny are fighting. I'm very sad #bigbangtheory— Cynthia Pennell (@cindypennell) September 22, 2015

I'm with Sheldon -- I blame Madonna.
