Apple is expected to announce its next-generation iPad Air and iPad mini on Oct. 16, but don't expect to hear anything about a larger tablet model.

Apple has pushed back plans to mass produce a 12.9-inch iPad to "early next year," according to The Wall Street Journal.

The report said the company is instead focusing on meeting the huge demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The Journal cited mostly unnamed sources, one of whom said that the output for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus "remains unsatisfactory," and it would be challenging to pour already-strained resources into larger-sized iPad production. For now, we may have to settle for the 9.7-inch iPad.

Apple's latest iPhones, as you may have heard, are selling quite well. In their opening weekend of sales, the smartphones sold 10 million units, a record. Conversely, iPad sales aren't doing so hot, and the phablet-sized iPhone 6 Plus could siphon even more attention away from the iPad mini.

Rumors about bigger-sized iPads aren't unusual. The Journal article didn't offer a time frame for the release of the bigger iPad, so it's anyone's guess when we'll actually see a 12.9-inch iPad, if ever.
