Everyone has heard of Bill Nye -- but what do we really know about the bow tie-wearing scientist?

Not enough -- and two filmmakers are setting out to change that.

Jason Sussberg and David Alvarado have set up a Kickstarter campaign to fund a documentary about the man who taught science to generations of children as host of '90s children's show Bill Nye the Science Guy.

"He impacted us in monumental ways," Sussberg says in the Kickstarter video. "We wanted to know: Who was the man behind the bowtie? And where was he now?"

The documentary will be produced by Academy Award-winning producer Seth Gordon, Nick Pampenella and Kate McLean. Thus far, the project has raised a little over $5,000; ultimately, it's aiming for $650,000.

Alvarado shared a rough cut of a scene from the documentary on his Vimeo page. In it, Nye talks about space exploration and the future launch of spacecraft LightSail.

“We want to explore space to answer those two deep questions: Where did we all come from? And are we alone in the universe?” Nye asks in the clip.

The Kickstarter campaign will be up for the next 31 days.
